In this industry, you’re only ever as good as your last show. I’m still learning - we all are - and that process never stops. More specifically, I was awarded MIMC with Gold Star - that is, a Member Of The Inner Magic Circle with Gold Star, the highest possible award the organisation can give, presented by the President of The Magic Circle himself and awarded to a select group of only 300 people worldwide at any one time. I won’t list my entire CV - but in 40 years as a successful magician, presenter, and Cirque Du Soleil Alumnus, consulting and performing for the brightest in Hollywood and working with some of the most spectacular shows on the planet, I’m rather glad I did.īut, I was reminded of those words - “You’re not qualified” - when I earned my qualifying award from “The Magic Circle” - the world’s most prestigious magic society. Thankfully, I ignored that careers advisor.
I was already performing magic shows for the local kids who lived on my street. Yes, the tickets only sold for 20p a show, and yes, there were no lights or sound equipment - but I did have a bed sheet for a backdrop. Most importantly, I was selling out paid shows and earned rave reviews from my audiences (the neighbour kids and their parents).īeing 13 years old, I didn’t realise it at the time - but looking back now, through those shows I was improving my performance, building my confidence and learning valuable communication and people skills. The thing is, I may not have been qualified, but I was experienced. Instead, this school ‘expert’ advised I joined the military. Now, that’s an incredible career for some people. But I am not one of those people. It was like a verbal paper cut and they continued to repeat themselves in my head long after. I didn’t believe them, but at the same time, those words have always stuck with me. Back when I was 13 years old, I told my school careers officer that I wanted to be a magician.
